Minted in near-pure gold by order of King Manuel I, the coin known as the "Portuguese" became one of the most prestigious Portuguese coins in history, symbolizing Portugal's economic and political power during the Age of Discoveries. With a value of 10 cruzados and an unusual size for its time, it stood out as the largest European coin of its era.
Initially produced in Lisbon and later also in Portuguese territories in the East, the "Portuguese" coin was used as a means of payment, a diplomatic gift, and a symbol of international prestige. Its impact was so significant that several cities in northern Europe began to imitate it between 1570 and 1640, giving rise to the famous Portugalöser or Portugaloides.
In this contemporary reinterpretation of a historical coin, designer Jorge Silva highlighted the symbols of the Cross of Christ and the coat of arms present on the original coin, also adding a quote from Fernando Pessoa that evokes the poetic dimension of Portuguese identity.
Minted exclusively in gold with a proof finish, this new issue pays homage to the historical legacy of the "Portuguese," reinterpreting one of the most emblematic symbols of national numismatics.
