The 2026 FIFA World Cup promises to be historic.

In 2026, the championship brings together, for the first time, three host countries — Canada, the United States, and Mexico — and presents a new format with 48 competing teams. More teams, more cultures, more stories intersecting on the same global stage.

This change marks a significant turning point in the tournament's model, reinforcing its truly universal character. With stadiums spread across 16 cities and all confederations represented, the World Cup reaches new audiences and gains an even more plural and inclusive dimension.

A coin that celebrates the game and unites the world

To mark this unique moment, Portugal is issuing a commemorative €5.00 coin, evoking not only the competition, but also the sharing, emotion, and connection between nations through football.

The design highlights the tournament's iconic trophy, the year of the competition, and the host countries, complemented by a bicycle kick, symbolizing "spectacle football." It was created by Nuno Martins, a design professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, whose career already includes collaborations with the Portuguese Football Federation.
