The Real (plural Réis - non-fractional currency) had been the monetary unit used in Brazil, being the first official currency in Brazil from the colonial period (1654) until 1942. The Real was later replaced by the Cruzeiro (also known as the old Cruzeiro), being the first currency to use centavos in Brazil (fractional currency). This currency circulated from November 1, 1942 to February 12, 1967, when due to inflation, it was necessary to adapt the currency, creating the transitional currency Cruzeiro Novo - which had the value of 1,000 "old" Cruzeiros. On February 28, 1986, the Cruzado currency was created as part of the Cruzado Plan, and was replaced by the Cruzado Novo in 1989. In 1990, the currency was renamed Cruzeiro and remained so for 3 years. In 1993, the Cruzeiro Real was introduced, and was replaced the following year by the current Real.
