The Portuguese Mint marks the bicentenary of Camilo Castelo Branco's birth with the issue of a 5 euro commemorative coin, created by Pedro Carvalho, celebrating one of the most remarkable figures in the Portuguese literature.
Camilo Castelo Branco (1825–1890) was a prolific author, with more than 260 published titles, who lived through the 19th century with intensity. Novelist, poet, playwright and columnist, Camilo knew how to translate in his works the depth of the human soul, moral dilemmas, love and tragedy, always with an unmistakable style and a rich and expressive vocabulary. Works like Amor de Perdição continue to move and inspire readers of all generations.

Born in Lisbon, but deeply connected to the North of the country — especially to Quinta de São Miguel de Seide, now a house-museum —, Camilo lived intensely and transformed his personal experiences, marked by dramatic episodes, into reference literature.

This coin is not just a tribute: it is a symbol of Camilo Castelo Branco's lasting contribution to the national literary identity.
