This commemorative coin is part of the series dedicated to Ibero-American heritage and pays tribute to the Águas Livres Aqueduct, one of Lisbon's most iconic engineering and architectural landmarks. Commissioned by King John V in the 18th century, the aqueduct was designed to supply the city with potable water, resolving a long-standing supply issue that dated back to Roman times.
Designed by Nuno Caetano, a numismatic engraver at the Mint, the coin depicts the monumental section spanning the Alcântara Valley, featuring imposing arches and the famous pointed stone arch—one of the largest in the world. The reverse side displays the coat of arms and the armillary sphere of the Portuguese Republic, surrounded by the official coats of arms of the countries participating in the XIV Ibero-American Series.
The Ibero-American Series is an international project that brings together various countries for a joint issue of commemorative coins. The initiative was promoted by the Spanish Mint (FNMT) and began in 1991 with the aim of celebrating the history, culture, and ties between Ibero-American nations. Portugal has participated since the very first edition.
How does the series work?
A common theme. All participating countries select a theme that serves as inspiration for their coins. Each country interprets the theme in its own way, highlighting its heritage or cultural identity.
A common face. The coins feature the coats of arms of the participating countries—one of the series' most distinctive characteristics.
An international collection. Each issue allows for the gathering of coins from various countries; while the designs differ, they are united by the same project. The series does not necessarily feature the same number of countries in every edition, nor do all Ibero-American countries participate in every issue.
The 14th Ibero-American Series, dedicated to the theme of "Heritage," involves nine participating countries: Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, and Portugal.
