The Threatened Species series, a series of collector coins created by the Mint in order to promote the awareness and preservation of endangered fauna and flora species, features the issue of a coin dedicated to the Alcal-do Algarve, designed by the illustrator Catarina Sobral.
The Alcar-do-Algarve (Tuberaria major) is a small perennial plant with yellow flowers. It is a national endemic species distributed along the coast of Algarve, covering the municipalities of Faro, Olhão and Loulé. As a result of the growing urban pressure, this species is currently classified as «Critically Endangered».
