Antero de Quental was a Portuguese writer and poet who played an important role in the Generation of 70 movement. Born in 1842 in Ponta Delgada, he moved to Coimbra at the age of 16, where he founded the Sociedade do Raio (Ray Society). He published his first sonnets in 1861. In 1866, he moved to Lisbon, then passed through Paris the following year, returning to Lisbon, where in 1870 he founded the newspaper A República - Jornal da Democracia Portuguesa (The Republic - Journal of Portuguese Democracy), with Oliveira Martins.
