The Uniform Penny Post reform, implemented in 1840 in the United Kingdom, was a postal revolution—it established a uniform rate (one penny) for letters regardless of distance, and also coincided with the issuance of the first postage stamps (“Penny Black”). The 160th anniversary of this reform was celebrated in 2000 with this coin.
The minting of this coin was done by the Pobjoy Mint in the United Kingdom—famous for producing special coins in unconventional metals such as titanium.
The minting technique, bimetallic with titanium infiltration in the center during minting, was technologically innovative at the time.
