Erected in the 12th century under the impetus of Bishop Maurice de Sully, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is a jewel of Gothic architecture that has dominated the Île de la Cité for more than eight centuries. This architectural masterpiece, characterized by its slender flying buttresses and flamboyant rose windows, bears witness to the skill of medieval builders and has been the setting for numerous major historical events, such as the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte.
This year, the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) is honoring the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral to the public by striking a commemorative €2 coin, immortalizing the lines of this gem of Gothic art.
The obverse of this coin depicts a three-dimensional representation of the cathedral's west facade, with its rose window emerging between the two towers. The official Notre-Dame de Paris logo also appears near the edge of the coin.
