Portugal 2012 2,5€ Guimarães

In continuation of the series of coins dedicated to sites in Portugal classified by UNESCO as World Heritage, the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda is minting a coin making reference to the Historical Centre of Guimarães, with a face value of 2.50 euros, issued in cupronickel and in 925‰ silver with a proof finish.
When designing the obverse of the coin, its author, António Marinho, decided on the aesthetic of representing a plan view of the most significant architectural features, aiming to transmit the idea of a view of the site from space and, at the same time, to refer to the concept of the historical centre of Guimarães as a point of reference in a worldwide context.
On the reverse of the coin, another plan view is represented of the Praça (Main Square) and the Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, as it visually transmits the most universal message of the Historical Centre. A glimpse of the emblematic Rua de Santa Maria is also integrated. Due to its importance and identity, it is an expression of the daily life of the population of this city.
